Looking Beyond What We See and Hear

Children and young people don’t always say exactly what they are feeling or thinking. Sometimes “I’m fine”, “I don’t care” or “I don’t need help” may be exactly what they mean. At other times, there may be feelings, thoughts or experiences sitting beneath the words we hear or the behaviour we see.

This visual is a reminder for parents and carers to stay curious rather than assume. We don’t need to interpret every response or immediately find a solution. By noticing, listening, and creating space for honest conversation, we can strengthen trust and help children and young people feel SEEN. HEARD. and UNDERSTOOD.

Sometimes the most important part of communication is what has not yet been said.
